Spanish Steps Guide
The Spanish Steps (Scalinata della Trinita dei Monti) is a set of famous steps in the city of Rome. It ascends steeply between the Piazza di Spagna at the base and Piazza Trinità dei Monti above. The Spanish Steps is the longest and widest staircase in all of Europe. The design of the steps was finished by Francesco de Sanctis after generations of controversy.
The Spanish Steps area of Rome is understanably very popular and has attracted designer stores, upmarket bars and restaurants. Piazza di Spagna is found just south of the Villa Borghese park, halfway between Piazza Barberini and Piazza del Popolo and near the Via del Corso, Rome's main shopping street.
Various traditional trattorie and pizzerie serve traditional Roman cuisine, so eat there rather than the exclusive restaurants if you cannot afford the prices. Being such a popular tourist spot, some vendors do charge a premium, so if you prefer to eat elsewhere first, that might be the trick. At night, the Spanish Steps can be a very romantic spot. Just be aware of the pick-pockets and the hawkers pushing flowers and trinkets.
Getting to the Spanish Steps is so easy with rail, bus or taxi, that there are no excuses to not visit, whether you rent an apartment near the Spanish steps or elsewhere.
